Study Tips

Prepare for Tests Early - They count the most.
The best way to study for any math test is to look over previous quizzes and also any review worksheets we give you (i.e. "Worksheet 1a, Review Worksheet...") KEEP ALL YOUR TESTS (even if you do not want to) to study for the final exam at the end of the semester. Before the tests, utilize help sessions to study and go over previous quizzes from that chapter. Make sure you understand what you missed on your quizzes before you walk in to take your test. Remember to eat a good breakfast and get plenty of rest. If you feel you have test anxiety, visit the following link.

Homework
Work as much of the homework as you can. If you get stuck on one, don't quit the entire assignment! Just go to the next problem. Turn in everything you work on. If organization is a problem for you, come up with a new method of getting your assignments to class. Homework is mostly effort and getting it to class. There is no bonus work or late work. At the end of the semester, you will either be thankful for your homework grade pulling you up, or be regrettful because your homework grade is pulling you down.

Out of the students polled last semester, 90% of the student advised students in this class to do their homework. Although homework percentages do no count as much as test grades, parents should be on the look out for patterns in behavior. Failure to do homework usually indicates that a student is struggling or unmotivated. If homework grades drop, usually other grades drop as well (and visa versa.)

Extra Help
I recommend that all students that all students averaging a C or lower attend at least 1 help session a week. They may come to my help sessions or the helps sessions provided through the math department.

Private Tutors
I highly recommend exhausting all the wonderful opportunities for free extra help before looking for a private tutor. Although some tutors can be wonderful resources, it is ultimately the student's responsibility to find communicate with his or her teacher, ask for help, and find out the grading expectations. The tutor does not grade tests and quizzes, and grading expectations from school to school may be different. If you decide to get a private tutor, I have a list of tutors available for you. Having a tutor does not excuse any student from participating in class or working on homework when class time is available.
